Introduction
[Fig. 2] Alan Clayton, CEO of Revoutionise

Giles has invited me to say a few words by way of an introduction. After some thought I have identified the four key differentiators that make Giles exceptional:

  1. A precise, logical, and insightful mind: Giles possesses an incredible ability to help clients bring clarity out of confusion, make decisions out of debates, and turn procrastination into action. His precise analytical skills are complemented by a vast bank of knowledge, enabling him to provide invaluable guidance.

  2. A long track record of making difficult decisions: Giles has consistently demonstrated the courage and resilience needed to make tough choices. Having battled through numerous challenges, he not only knows how to win, but also possesses the emotional capacity to persevere without compromising. This strength radiates from him, inspiring confidence in his clients.

  3. Managing internal relationships: Giles' unique skill lies in managing relationships, especially with executive teams and boards, to unlock transformative results. His extensive experience and expertise in this area make him the ideal choice.

  4. Unparalleled fundraising success: Giles has raised an impressive amount of money throughout his career — buckets of it, in fact. If you're aiming to raise a truly transformational amount of funds, you need someone with experience in achieving just that. His extensive experience and expertise in this area make him the ideal choice.

Sixty years.

I was a somewhat earnest child. When I was ten I recruited two friends as sub-editors to help me create a school newspaper, which we sold in the playground for a penny to raise funds for Oxfam. At twelve I set up a formal Oxfam Society and organised a jumble sale, which raised £80, equivalent to £1,000 today. This was formative for me, as I received a personalised thank you letter from the then Director of Oxfam, H Leslie Kirkley, which I still have and treasure to this day.

It inspired me to do more, much more. The jumble sales became a regular thing each term. Then after my A-levels, I led a team of friends to organise Oxfam Walk ‘69, the largest sponsored walk in the UK. After university Help the Aged asked me to recruit and lead a team organising 'Big Town Walks' across the country.

Then, for 30 years, I served as the fundraising Director of the NSPCC, where I organised the two largest Major Appeals in UK history. First, in 1984 the Centenary Appeal. Then, in 1999, the Full Stop Appeal which raised £500m in today's money and has never been beaten. During my tenure, I grew the NSPCC's fundraising from fifteenth to third in the charity league tables. I pioneered many initiatives, including the first-ever successful DRTV Ads.

Here in the UK I was one of the founders of The Institute of Fundraising and, while Chair, created The Fundraising Convention. I co-founded The Commission on the Donor Experience with Ken Burnett.

On the world stage, I was a founder and then Treasurer of the World Fundraising Council and was a trustee of the International Fundraising Congress (IFC).

I have received many accolades for my work, including UK Professional Fundraiser of the Year, the Institute of Fundraising's 'Lifetime Achievement' award and the CBE.

Why Choose Me?

A different type of consultant.

As a person I tend to be quiet and contemplative, so singing my own praises goes a little against the grain. However, as you have made the effort to visit, I need, at the very least, to set out here a few reasons as to why you might choose me as your accomplice.

As a consultant, I am probably unique in the UK for the breadth and depth of my knowledge and experience gained working at the coalface. I have transformed fundraising, both within organisations, and at the broader landscape level, driving innovation and best practice throughout the sector.

I firmly believe that success requires a supportive and engaged organisation that has fundraising at its heart. Whether it’s creating and driving a vision, getting buy-in from senior stakeholders, or leading and inspiring your team, I can help you foster the culture necessary for fundraising to flourish.

I am passionate about passing on the principles and practice of the art of fundraising to the next generation. What is more, while I can certainly guide you through the mechanics of fundraising, equally significant is the underlying philosophy.

A golden thread.

I believe that fundraising is not simply about soliciting donations from supporters. It is a deeply meaningful opportunity to inspire individuals to make a profound and positive impact on the world through their giving. When donors feel genuinely connected to a cause and can see the impact of their contributions, they are moved to become active partners in bringing about meaningful change. By crafting an experience that engages the heart and the mind, fundraising can truly become a transformative and empowering experience for all involved.

Ultimately, it is not just about the financial support, but about the shared vision of a better world, and the collective power we have to create it through our generosity and compassion.

You may be wondering why this simple philosophy matters and how it is pertinent to the task at hand. The answer is two-fold. It is certainly good for donors. And it should also appeal to the results-driven fundraiser who, by adopting it, will deliver higher returns.
